The Bulgarian music industry generates €145 million annually: The sector is growing faster than official reports

The Bulgarian music industry is not just a field of “cultural subsidies,” but a powerful economic driver with an annual volume of €145 million. This is revealed by data from a large-scale national study of the sector, presented today in Sofia by the Association of Independent Music Artists and Producers (ANMIP) and the agency KANTAR.

A new economic reality: Growth beyond expectations
The report shows that the market is developing at sustained double-digit rates, exceeding public expectations. At the core of this “music economy” are end-consumer expenditures, which account for 80% of the market. Particularly impressive is the rise of streaming services, which have tripled their volume over five years, reaching more than €9.5 million annually.

Concerts – the backbone of the industry
The data is clear: live music is the main pillar of the sector. Ticket sales for concerts and festivals generate 57% of total industry revenue. This segment not only contributes more than half of the economic value but also drives employment and added value across related businesses. At the same time, revenues from copyright and neighboring rights (PROPHON and Musicautor) have also increased significantly, by 19% and 37% respectively for the period 2022–2024, signaling clear market professionalization.

For ANMIP members, these findings call for a fundamental shift in government thinking.
“We sincerely hope this study is another step toward changing the way institutions view music – not as an expense, but as a strategic investment and part of the country’s economy,” the Association commented. “The scale of the market reveals real growth potential that has so far remained invisible in public policy.”

What’s missing is coordination, not potential
KANTAR’s analysis highlights that with targeted government structure and better institutional coordination, Bulgaria has the capacity to triple its international music potential. The key conclusion is that the sector has the resources for strong global export but needs coordinated support to realize this growth on the world stage.

Research methodology
The results are based on a comprehensive KANTAR analysis, including a nationally representative consumer survey, expert interviews with leading figures from the music and financial sectors, and a detailed review of public statistical data and financial reports.
